VIGINUM and Inria are jointly launching a scientific prize that aims to reward excellence in research in the field of digitalsciences applied to the fight against information manipulation. It will highlight technical and methodological advances that enable better detection, understanding and countering of information interference, whether cognitive, technological or social. More broadly, Inria and Viginum want to make this prize a European benchmark in order to encourage scientific innovation and interdisciplinarity in the field of combating information manipulation.
Specifically, this Prize will be awarded each year to three scientific articles published or accepted in a scientific journal or in the proceedings of a national or international conference:
The jury prize is worth €5,000.
The innovation prize is worth €2,000.
The Young Researcher Prize is worth €1,000.
The Prize is open to senior scientists and is aimed at articles published or accepted for publication in the three years prior to their date of submission for consideration for the Prize.
Articles submitted to the jury must meet the following criteria:
Be written in French or English;
Describe a research result, a technical innovation, an educational presentation of the state of the art, or an initiative aimed at promoting interdisciplinarity
The article must be accompanied by a presentation text (in French or English) that emphasises the benefits of the work and its current or potential impact in the field of combating information manipulation (4,000 characters max).

One of the authors of the article must be affiliated with a public or private research laboratory located in the European Union.
A wide range of topics related to information manipulation may be addressed, including but not limited to:
- Data science and artificial intelligence:
Data mining
Machine learning
Big data
Coordinated inauthentic behaviour detection
- Computational social sciences:
Operating principles of (content recommendation) algorithms used by online platforms
Cognitive influencing and manipulation (e.g. bias and framing)
Dissemination of manipulated content and impacts thereof
Construction and manipulation of mental representations
- Signal processing:
Information filtering and extraction
Audio and video compression
De-normalisation and amplification of weak signals
- Computer science (algorithmics):
Sorting, search and indexing algorithms
Structured manipulation of charts and networks
Compression and format conversion.
